Mini guide to Peterborough
While Peterborough is not famed as a tourist destination, this busy city has a
wealth of attractions ranging from a modern and extensive shopping centre to an
impressive Norman cathedral. Peterborough combines a 3,000 year heritage with
all the comforts and convenience of a dynamic regional centre. There is even a
nearby Bronze Age settlement, known as Flag Fen.
Without doubt, the Gothic cathedral, built in 1118, is the centrepiece of the
city. With its awe-inspiring West Front, the cathedral is one of the finest
examples of Norman architecture in Europe. Another worthwhile attraction is
Peterborough Museum and Galleries, which houses natural history, archaeology,
Jurassic and Norman collections, and also boasts fine art dating from the 1600s
to the present day, including paintings by Van Huysum and Turner.
The charming Cathedral Square, with the cathedral on one side and the ancient
Guildhall on the other, is a lovely place to sit at a café and watch
the world go by. The square is flanked by the pedestrian-only shopping street,
Broad street, which runs down to the river. Also within easy reach are the impressive
Queensgate, Herewood Cross and Rivergate shopping centres.
Peterborough has much more to offer than just great shopping. It boasts an
exciting nightlife with three theatres, a comedy club, jazz cafés and
a host of bars and nightclubs. The city's restaurants cater for most tastes,
including French, Indian, Italian and Mexican cuisine; additionally, the Geest
Culinary Academy runs demonstrations and cooking classes. Peterborough was also
designated an Environment City in 1992, one of only four cities in Britain to
be given this status.
There are plenty of other sights near to the city. The most prominent attraction
is Flag Fen, a Bronze Age settlement with Bronze and Iron Age roundhouses, a
museum and Roman road. The nearby Nene Valley railway, a working steam railway,
offers a 15-mile roundtrip journey through the scenic Nene Valley.
Peterborough is mid-way between the East Anglian coast and the Midlands and
has excellent road and rail connections. The city is 10km from the A1, and less
than 35km from the A14, which links the east coast ports of Felixstowe and Harwich
with the Midlands. Peterborough is just a 45-minute train journey from central
London. London Stansted Airport, with its many national and international connections,
is approximately 1 hour, 30 minutes by train from Peterborough.
