Mini guide to Piccadilly Circus

Piccadilly Circus is a London icon, with its famous neon signs and a busy traffic junction with Regent Street, Piccadilly, Shaftesbury Avenue and Haymarket all converging here. The statue of Eros was erected as a memorial to the anti-child labour reformer, the Earl of Shaftesbury. Piccadilly Circus is the gateway to the theatre district and shopping in the West End. In and around Piccadilly Circus you will find the largest music store in London - Tower Records, as well as Lillywhites sports department store, and Blackwell's bookstore.

The Trocadero is a mega dining, entertainment and shopping complex. Inside are bars, restaurants, shops, cinema, and of course Funland, one of the world's largest indoor entertainment centres. Nearby, you will find the Rock Circus that will take you through the Rock music eras from the Fifties through to the Nineties.

Soho, just behind Piccadilly Circus, was the centre of Sixties fashion and is home to the famous Carnaby Street. Now this area is hip and full of pubs, bars and restaurants, and is a great place to hang out at night, although some areas are rather seedy. During the sixties Carnaby Street was at the fashion centre, but has since become more down-market, catering more to souvenir shops and tourists than true fashion. However, take a walk down the cobbled Newburgh Street, parallel to Carnaby Street, which still has some of London's more genuine cutting-edge clothes shops.

For something more upmarket, stroll down Piccadilly, where you will find famous shops such as Simpson's, Fortnum & Mason and the Burlington Arcade. Take a short detour down Jermyn Street, where there are many traditional British shops catering to men's needs. Afternoon tea at the Ritz is a must for any visitor; but make sure you adhere to their dress code (no shorts or sneakers) or else you won't be admitted.

Although this area is not abundant with places to stay, you can't get more central than Piccadilly Circus. Main access is by Piccadilly Circus station on both the Bakerloo and Piccadilly lines.
