Mini guide to Plymouth

Located on the south coast of England at the estuaries of two river systems,
Plymouth has figured predominantly in Britain's illustrious naval history and
remains one of the principal coastal cities of the Devon region.
The dockside districts are the city's chief drawcards, with the ships of the
British Navy, museums, marinas and an aquarium combining to make a rewarding
day's outing. Around the harbour are numerous old fortifications built to protect
the port, which nowadays provide excellent platforms from which to observe the
magnificent vistas of Plymouth Sound.
In the city centre is the Barbican Glass Works, which is the sole major complex
in the district to survive the heavy bombardments of World War II. To the north
of the city is Sir Francis Drake's old residence at Buckland Abbey, while to
the east is the charming Saltram House.
The waterfront districts has many of the best restaurants, although nightlife
is centred round the reconstructed downtown district. There are plenty of pubs,
bars and cafes to choose from. Green expanses for daytime leisure include Devonport
Park, Victoria Park and Beaumont Park.
One of the best local day excursions from Plymouth is to Mount Edgcumbe, where
woods and meadows lie within easy reach of some fabulous sand. Devon County
has some fantastic nature reserves, with the moorlands of Exmoor and the wilderness
of Dartmoor havens for outdoor enthusiasts.
Plymouth has its own airport that serves connections from London Gatwick and
Bristol. There are also convenient rail links from London Heathrow and excellent
motorway access.
