What to see by foot: Plymouth

By strolling around Plymouth you can sample some of England's illustrious maritime
history.
A must is a visit to Hamoaze Harbour to see some of the finest ships of the
British Navy and the fascinating floating bridge. Around the harbour districts
are museums, yacht clubs, and marinas celebrating the port's nautical past.
There is also an excellent aquarium. Situated about two miles up the Hamoaze
is the new waterfront district known as The Dock.
The harbour is defended by a fort on St. Nicholas Island, and other forts,
and particularly by a citadel, called the Haw, which overlooks the town and
afford glorious views of Plymouth Sound. To the north of the city lies Sir Francis
Drake's old residence at Buckland Abbey, while to the east is charming Saltram
House.
Other attractions around the city include the Armada Centre and the Barbican
Glass Works. Refreshing walks can be had in one of several parks located throughout
Plymouth such as Devonport Park, Victoria Park and Beaumont Park.
One of the best local day excursions from Plymouth is to Mount Edgcumbe, where
woods and meadows provide a welcome contrast to the urban bustle, and are within
easy reach of some fabulous sand.
