Poole is a popular summer holiday destination located in Dorset on England's southern
coast. Poole's main attraction are its beautiful beaches, some of the finest in
Britain, spread around its large natural harbour, which is a magnet for various
water sports and activities.
Poole enjoys a growing reputation as the UK's top seaside destination, with
its scenic beaches having been awarded Blue Flag status for over a decade, indicating
high standards of cleanliness. Sandbanks Beach offers around three miles of
golden sand, while Canford Cliffs Beach is more secluded and a haven for wildlife.
Urban attractions are concentrated along the quayside, with Poole also well
known for its pottery industry. Poole Pottery shop is a great place to pick
up a few bargains. Nearby is Poole Waterfront Museum, which houses a number
of interesting displays. The Cockle Trail winds through the quay and Old Town,
revealing 18th century architecture and cobbled lanes.
The quayside also offers a bustling atmosphere of restaurants, cafés,
pubs and shops. Fresh seafood dishes are popular here, with a number of restaurants
and cafés overlooking the water, providing picturesque views. Pubs provide
the bulk of the town's nightlife, with several opening late.
The surrounding Dorset countryside is blessed with stunning natural beauty
and includes popular attractions such as: Milton Abbas, the first planned settlement
in England and a charming village of whitewashed and thatched cottages; Cerne
Abbas, a quaint village of Tudor cottages and home to the Cerne Giant, a giant
figure of unknown origins carved into the hillside; and the charming village
of Shaftesbury, made famous through the novels of Thomas Hardy.
Poole is easily accessible from the M27 motorway at junction 1. The train station
is located in the centre of town and offers services to all major UK cities,
while daily coach services are also available. The nearest airport is Bournemouth
International Airport, nine miles from Poole, and it offers flights across the
UK as well as to Ireland and the Mediterranean.
