Mini guide to Portsmouth

Defensively situated on the peninsula of Portsea Island on the eastern flank of a huge, easily defended harbour, Portsmouth is home to England's Royal Navy. The charming old harbour district contains some interesting historic buildings, while Hampshire's hinterland and coastal regions are teeming with beautiful scenic sites.

The Historic Ships exhibition is the most popular attraction and is centred round three famous naval vessels. There is also an enthralling tour of a modern day frigate. Other military edutainment venues are Submarine World, the D-Day Museum and Royal Marines Museum.

Fortifications have played an important role in the town's history, and there are several excellent examples remaining, including Spitbank Fort, Fort Widley, Southsea Castle, and ancient Portchester Castle. In the Old Portsmouth district stand the resilient Round and Square Towers.

Hampshire abounds with rewarding tourist destinations, including majestic Winchester, once the capital of England and famed for its magnificent cathedral and perfectly preserved historic buildings. The coastal region is dotted with quaint seaside resorts while the hinterland is full of charming, little-visited villages and pleasant expanses of unspoiled nature.

Portsmouth offers a great range of nightlife to choose from. There are stylish winebars, historic pubs and waterfront bars for any occasion. Southsea is the place to dine out in Portsmouth, with quality restaurants serving both local (seafood) and international cuisine.

Portsmouth is well served by road and rail networks, and major international airports are within a short distance. London is only 90 minutes away by either car or train.
