What to see by foot: Portsmouth

Portsmouth's harbour districts are a delight to wander around, with surprises
around every corner.
Top on everyone's list of destinations are the Historic Ships in the Royal
Naval Base at the end of Queen Street. The complex comprises of the famous naval
vessels HMS Victory and HMS Warrior (Britain's first iron warship), as well
as the Mary Rose Museum (featuring the wreck of a Tudor warship) and Action
Stations (an interactive simulation of life aboard a modern naval frigate).
For more naval intrigue head across the water to Submarine World on Haslar Jetty
in Gosport, which includes a guided tour inside HMS Alliance, or to Spitbank
Fort, an offshore bastion of granite, iron and brick little altered since its
construction in the 1860s.
Old Portsmouth, based around the original harbour, preserves some Georgian
and a little Tudor character such as the Cathedral of St Thomas on the High
Street, a fifteenth-century wall protecting the Camber, and the Round and Square
Towers, which punctuate the Tudor fortifications, are popular vantage points
for observing nautical activities.
The suburb of Southsea boasts an impressive 16th century castle as well as
several military museums such as the D-Day Museum and the Royal Marines Museum.
Elsewhere around the city are 'The Bunker' tunnels, the Great Ditch, and The
Beacon of Fort Widley and 393 Commercial Rd, birthplace of Charles Dickens.
The city's outstanding ancient monument lies six miles north of the centre.
Portchester Castle was built by the Romans in the third century and is the finest
surviving example in northern Europe. Its walls are over twenty-feet high and
incorporate some twenty bastions. Later, a castle was built within Portchester's
precincts by Henry II, which Richard II extended and Henry V used as his garrison
when assembling the army that was to fight the Battle of Agincourt.
