Mini guide to Preston

Preston is located in England's northwest, near Liverpool and Manchester. Like those cities, Preston rose to prominence during the Industrial Revolution, though these days much of the industry has gone. It lies on the River Ribble, which flows into the Irish Sea, and is part of the county of Lancashire.

One of the best places to get an overview of Preston's heritage and culture is the Harris Museum & Art Gallery, which contains some wonderful examples of sculpture, ceramics and art. There are also constantly-changing exhibitions and workshops taking place in the large building, which was erected in 1882 in the Greek revivalist style. Beside the museum is the Flag Market, where outdoor events are often held in summer. These include the city Criers' Competition, an Historical Fayre and street theatre.

The tallest building in town is St Walburges Church, with its spire reaching 95 metres. Now a Grade 1 listed building, it was constructed by Joseph Hanson in 1854. Other buildings of note include: Hoghton Tower, built in the 16th century; the Museum of Lancashire; and Samlesbury Hall. There are also some pleasant green spaces, including Moor Park, Avenham Park and Miller Park, the last two of which are located on the northern bank of the River Ribble and are refreshing places for a stroll.

These days, Preston is one of Lancashire's foremost cultural centres. The docklands area has been redeveloped into a trendy shopping area, and unusual events are occasionally held here. Every 20 years, for example, the Preston Guild takes place, and there is also an annual maritime festival.

The countryside around Preston is very attractive and well worth exploring. The Ribble Valley, the Forest of Bowland, Beacon Fell Country Park, the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District are all within a short drive.

Finally, the city itself is easy to get to from most places in England, being located near a hub of major routes. The M6, M61, M65 and M55 all pass near to the city. As for trains, the hourly Intercity rail service can get you to London or Glasgow within 2 hours, 30 minutes, from where you can pick up a flight from one of the international airports.
