Geography of Reading

Reading is located in the lovely Berkshire countryside, less than 50 miles
west of London. Berkshire is a land of gentle river valleys, charming woodlands
of oak, ash and alder, rolling countryside and delightful meadows, all interspersed
with winding walks and wonderful drives. The majestic Thames valley is one of
the loveliest in the area and Reading enjoys a prime location along the river
banks.
Meandering through Berkshire on a river barge, and watching the setting sun
change the meadows into gold is a delightful experience.
The meadows beside the river become a carpet of bright wild flowers and plants
during the spring and summer months, with golden Meadow buttercups, blue Devil's-bit
Scabious, and purple Meadow Thistle. In July and August the sweet scent of Meadowsweet
blossoms produces a heady aroma that fills the warm summer air.
From Reading, paths extend along the Thames river as far as London and Oxford,
and are popular with walkers. The Oxfordshire countryside, to the North of Reading
is also lovely.
The countryside is also rich in animal life with hundreds of species of animals,
birds and insects. During the spring the Orange tip butterfly darts low over
the land in search of the Cuckoo Flower on which it lays its tiny orange eggs.
Damsel and dragonflies breed in the ditches and along the riverbanks, and in
late summer the meadows echo to the sound of grasshoppers and bush crickets.
