What to see by foot: Reading

In this bustling city, modern buildings and conveniences merge with historical
charm, and in fact during a walk around Reading you will see the Victorian red-brick
buildings for which the city is famous. The historic heart of Reading is bordered
by three important landmarks: the 19th century Museum of Reading and art gallery
alongside the gothic Town Hall; the ruins of the 12th century Reading Abbey
where Henry I is buried; and the beautiful formal Forbury Gardens, which were
once the forecourt of the abbey.
Reading Gaol (or Reading Young Offenders Centre in its current form) is right
next to the Abbey Ruins enshrined forever in literature thanks to the epic poem,
"Ballad of Reading Gaol," written by its most famous inmate, Oscar
Wilde. Designed in the 1830's as a 'model' prison, Wilde was sent here due to
concerns for his health.
Reading also boasts a number of other excellent museums. At the University
of Reading is The Museum of English Rural Life, which houses a national collection
depicting farming crafts and the countryside way of life over the past 150 years,
as well as The Ure Museum of Greek Archaeology, where you can see a fine collection
of ancient Greek ceramics.
Meanwhile,if you need to quench your thirst during your exploration of Reading
then make sure you visit The Sun Inn in Castle Street, one of Reading's most
fascinating old pubs. The place was probably a hostelry as far back as the 13th
century and it has a Norman archway that once led to a large underground hall.
It's also worth the 20 minute walk from the town centre to the Thames river,
where you can wander along the banks for hours, across grassy knolls, past quaint
locks and through pretty meadows. Another pretty waterway which is closer to
the centre is the Avon and Kennet canal which dissects the Oracle shopping centre
and has strolling paths along its banks.
