What to see by car: Reading

Many daytrips can be made from Reading to explore the countryside and places
of historical interest. Windsor Castle, in nearby Windsor, is the official residence
of The Queen and is the largest occupied castle in the world. Visitors can walk
around the State apartments, and discover the extensive suites at the heart
of the working palace.
Alternatively, near Reading is the Mapledurham House and Watermill, a lovely
Elizabethan mansion beside the Thames with one of the country's last working
watermills (producing wholewheat flour). Also close to the city is Basildon
Park, a classical Georgian house that is a National Trust property, and which
is surrounded by beautiful parkland overlooking the Thames valley.
Another nearby park is Dinston Pastures Country Park, which has acres of lakes,
rivers and meadows to explore with hundreds of flowers, insects, animals and
birds. Sailing and picnicking are two popular activities. Meanwhile at The Living
Rainforest visitors can view an amazing collection of beautiful tropical plants,
birds and rainforest mammals under 20,000sq ft of glass.
Children will love Bucklebury Farm Park, where they can interact with ducks,
geese, pigs, sheep and cows, or picnic in the meadow and work off steam in the
adventure playground.
