Mini guide to Ross-on-Wye

Situated in the west of England in the spectacular rural county of Herefordshire, Ross-on-Wye is a historic market town perched on a sandstone cliff overlooking the beautiful Wye River. Tourists are continually drawn to this laid back market town for its interesting attractions and as a base from which to explore the Wye Valley.

The 13th century red sandstone church of St Maryýs dominates the skyline and has some pretty gardens that were created by the popular 'Man of Ross', John Kyrle, who lived here centuries ago. The Prospect is a view point in the church garden that affords amazing views over the meandering river.

Ross-on-Wye is a town of Tudor timbered houses and a compact centre that encircles the 17th century Market Hall, which houses the Heritage Centre as well as a twice weekly market. Craft shops and high street stores line the main street down the hill towards Button Museum.

On a warm summer's day the town is a relaxing hangout where the riverside meadows and traditional pubs serving real ale make for a wonderful experience. River cruises leave from outside the popular Hope & Anchor pub and make for an enjoyable afternoon outing. Every August, Ross is also host to the International Music Festival, held on the river's banks, an extravaganza of music, dance and theatre.

The whole area is loaded with historical attractions including Roman forts, medieval castles, caves and natural beauty; the highlight is Symonds Yat, with its striking river scenery and lush woodlands. Other nearby attractions include the Forest of Dean, Malvern Hills and the sublime Brecon Beacons, while the ancient, nearby cities of Hereford and Gloucester are also worth a look.

Ross-on-Wye is conveniently located at the end of the M50 motorway, which connects with the M5 at junction 8. There is no rail access to the town, but trains run every hour from London's Paddington Station to Gloucester, from where bus services connect to Ross. National Express coaches run frequently from London throughout the day via Gloucester or Heathrow International Airport.
