Mini guide to Rugby


Located in Warwickshire in the heart of England, Rugby is known for its medieval market, world famous public school, as a centre of railways and canals, and of course the home to rugby football! It is centrally located and an excellent base from which to explore nearby cities like Coventry, Leamington Spa, Birmingham and Warwick, all boasting major historical attractions and natural beauty.

The famous Rugby School dominates much of the centre and the south of the town. The sport of rugby originated at the school in 1823 and matches are still played there today. Rugby enthusiasts from all over the world visit the school and the grounds, especially to pay homage to the statue of William Webb Ellis and read the famous words on the commemoration plaque at Rugby School Close. Rugby enthusiasts shouldn't miss the James Gilbert Rugby Football Museum.

There are many world famous attractions that are within an easy driving distance from Rugby. A few that are off the beaten track are: the Heritage Motor Centre, boasting the largest collection of historic British cars in the world; Stanford Hall, a 17th century manor house located within stunning gardens by the River Avon; Ryton Organic Gardens, comprising of beautifully landscaped gardens and a 'vegetable kingdom' display; and the Draycote Water and Country Park, a 21 acre park with lots of outdoor water activities like sailing, fishing, walking trails, as well as an adventure playground.

For a rural shopping experience, visit the Old Dairy Farm craft centre near Weedon. Here you can find anything from crafts to classic designer clothes and home made delicacies.

Rugby can be easily reached by car, train or canal boat! The closest airport is Birmingham International, which is less than 30 minutes away. Motorists will find it conveniently near junction 18 of the M1 and trains stop here four times an hour between London Euston station and Birmingham New street station (duration: 1 hour).
