Mini guide to Rye

A visit to the vibrant hilltop town of Rye is like stepping back in time. Once an important defensive position on England's southern coast, it has managed to preserve its medieval buildings, cobbled laneways, imposing castles and churches. It boasts a relaxed atmosphere together with a burgeoning arts scene and an infectious historical charm.

The 12th century St Mary's Church is the best vantage point for views of the town revealing a patchwork of Georgian and Tudor houses, twisting cobbled laneways and a myriad of other period buildings. The church itself is famous for its turret clock, dating back to 1561, and the oldest in the country still working. Other historical landmarks that shouldn't be missed include: Augustinian Friary; Rye Castle, with its impressive 13th century Ypres Tower; and the remnants of the old town wall.

The best way to discover the town is to wander the cobbled streets and explore the twisting laneways. You'll come across plenty of antique shops, art galleries, book shops and cafés, all housed in ancient buildings. Rye Castle Museum has two locations and documents the town's fascinating history through displays of medieval pottery and weapons.

Rye isn't short on places to eat and drink, with a huge array of teashops, pubs, inns and restaurants offering traditional hospitality in historic surroundings. Local fresh seafood is especially popular, as is the locally brewed ale. The town also offers swimming, windsurfing, horseback riding, fishing and golf.

Rye is part of what is known as historic 1066 country, so there is no shortage of nearby attractions. Bodiam Castle, built in 1385, is one of the most celebrated castles in the country due to its grandeur and variety of medieval features. Sissinghurst Garden is world famous, while the historic town of Battle is where William the Conqueror famously defeated King Harold.

Rye lies on the A259 between Hastings and Folkestone, and is about one hour's drive from the M25 motorway. Rye Station offers frequent rail services to London, while regular coach services are also available.
