Scarborough is compact, with picturesque seaside promenades and pleasant old
town districts combining to create a comfortable and rewarding place to stroll
around.
A visit to Scarborough Castle makes an excellent starting point to exploring
the area. Situated on the highest point of a promontory overlooking the town,
the castle affords spectacular views over the Scarborough Bay. The history of
this castle dates back well before the middle ages. Bronze and Iron Age relics
have been found on the wooded castle crag, together with fragments of a fourth-century
Roman signalling station, Saxon and Norman chapels and a Viking camp, The present
castle consists mainly of a three-storey keep dating from the twelfth century,
and a thirteenth-century barbican and raking buttressed walls which trace the
cliff edge. As you leave the castle, drop into the church of St Mary (1180),
immediately below on Castle Road, whose graveyard contains the tomb of Anne
Brontë, who died here in 1849.
Centrally located in the town, the Scarborough Art Gallery displays some of
the work of the Victorian Leeds born artist John Grimshaw (1836-1893), who spent
many of his holidays in Scarborough and Whitby. Grimshaw's art displayed at
the gallery focuses on the Scarborough bays with evocative ships on fire or
nocturnal and twilight views of the bays - his use of light and reflection is
captivating. Nearby are the Victorian Wood End, Rotunda Museum, and the renowned
Stephen Joseph Theatre. A stroll along
The North Bay is family-oriented, with massive water slides at Atlantis, enthralling
Kinderland, the miniature North Bay Railway, and the excellent Sea Life Centre.
The South Bay is more refined, backed by the pleasant Valley Gardens and the
Italianate meanderings of the South Cliff Gardens. A stroll along the the Esplanade
above the gardens is a great way to take in the Victorian architecture and spa
facilities.
