What to see by car: Scarborough

Scarborough is a great base from which to explore the many other attractions
in the area, such as Whitby, Robin Hoods Bay and the beautiful North York Moors
National Park, a mecca for walkers and cyclists.
The North Yorkshire coast is the southernmost stretch of a cliff-edged shore
that stretches almost unbroken to the Scottish border.
Robin Hood's Bay is the most popular of the many Yorkshire villages, with fishing
and smuggling traditions, while bluff Staithes - a fishing harbour on the far
edge of North Yorkshire - has yet to tip over into full-blown tourist mode.
Whitby, in between the two, is the best stopover, its fine sands and resort
facilities tempered by its abbey ruins, cobbled streets, Georgian buildings
and maritime heritage. For those who want to sample the most dizzying clifftops,
the Cleveland Way provides a marked path along virtually the entire length of
the coast.
South Yorkshire and East Riding are brimming with industrial history and heritage,
the famous Doncaster Races, fascinating castles, the magnificent Humber Bridge,
and Hull's now famous 'The Deep'.
To the west lie the spectacular Yorkshire Dales, each part of which has its
own distinct character and history. At beautiful Ingleton you'll find White
Scar Cave, the spectacular massive ice-age cavern with underground waterfalls,
streams and thousands of stalactites. Cyclists love the Dales and all the National
Park Centres offer advice on marked cycle ways and cycle hire, as well as being
a favourite for walkers. Dotted within stunning scenery are bustling villages
with shops offering arts, crafts and some of the best outdoor clothing and equipments
shops in the country.
