Travelling to Southampton
    
Southampton is well serviced by all modes of transport and even has its own
international airport. It is conveniently accessible by major motorways, has
regular express trains to London and, of course, is a major port for ferries
and ships.
Motorists have easy access to all parts of Southampton by exiting junctions
2 through 8 of the coastal M27. The M3 joins this busy motorway at junction
4/14. At this point the A33 artery feeds directly into the city centre. The
presence of the Southampton Water restricts traffic westwards from the city
centre.
Southampton International Airport is located just 10 miles from Winchester,
20 miles from Portsmouth and 70 miles from London. The airport is serviced by
rail, with several direct trains an hour to London. There is a half hourly bus
service from central Southampton to the airport.
It is a 7 minute journey from the city to Southampton train station, from here
connections to all major UK cities can easily be obtained. Other connecting
stations include Weymouth, Poole, Bournemouth, Fareham, Portsmouth, Reading,
Oxford, Coventry and Birmingham. Several trains an hour leave London Waterloo
station for Southampton Central station (duration: 90 mins). Conveniently Waterloo
is also the departure point for Eurostar services to Continental Europe.
The days of ocean-going liners steaming out of Southampton are long gone but
ferries do depart regularly for the Isle of Wight. International destinations
are reached from the busier ferry port in Portsmouth.
