What to see by foot: Southampton
    
Southampton's famous maritime history can be discovered by strolling along
the Town Quay with its marina and popular bars and restaurants. It is from here
that many immigrants left for the Americas in ships that included the Mayflower.
Famously the Titanic departed on its only voyage from here. The Maritime Museum,
housed in a former medieval warehouse nearby, shows the importance of the sea
in Southampton's past and chronicles its development as a port in the 19th century
and during the age of the great liners. Yachting enthusiast should head for
the Ocean Village to admire the plentiful sailboats that enjoy weekends out
on the Solent and Southampton water.
From the time of the Saxons history has left its mark on the city and remains
of the medieval town walls still stand. They are among the best preserved in
the UK with 13 of the original 29 towers still standing. Through the Westgate,
Henry V set out to his famous victory at the battle of Agincourt. For a further
dose of history, the Medieval Merchant's House in French Street has been faithfully
restored and furnished, taking visitors back to the 13th century.
The Mayflower Memorial opposite Mayflower Park is of great historical interest,
especially for State side visitors. It commemorates the departure of their pilgrim
fathers in the Mayflower and Speedwell from Southampton in August, 1620.
The Museum of Archaeology houses one of the top ten archaeological collections
in Britain. It traces Southampton's history from Roman times through to medieval
times with an impressive range of personal possessions such as pottery, glass
and jewellery. Also good for rainy days is the exemplary Southampton City Art
Gallery featuring 3,500 works of art spanning six centuries.
The Tudor House Museum is the city's main museum, complete with a minstrel's
gallery, creaky floorboards, old kitchens, one of Henry VIIIs cannons and the
ghost of Anne Boleyn!
