What to see by car: Southampton

Southampton is the home port to some of the world's most famous cruise liners,
including QE2, Oriana, Aurora and Arcadia. Not surprisingly the Ocean Village
is one of the UK's biggest marina developments, within easy reach of the city
centre.
Southampton has also earned itself the nickname 'Green City' with good justification
and boasts a rich heritage of spectacular parks and open spaces. At the heart
of this are the magnificent Central Parks in the middle of the city itself.
Several historic houses and castles are found within easy reach of Southampton.
Chawton House, one mile south of Alton off the A31, is where Jane Austen wrote
Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice and Mansfield Park. Open to the public
it is a must-see for literary buffs! Dating from the late 1500s, Longleat House
is a magnificent example of Elizabethan architecture near Warminster. Originally
the home of the Marquess of Bath, it has been open to the public for more than
40 years. Another popular day trip is to the magnificent Beaulieu House, with
its lovely gardens and palatial interiors.
The New Forest, located to the west of Southampton is one of Britain's most
famous areas of natural beauty, with a long history attached to the area. Today
it remains well preserved with several camping grounds located around the forest
town of Lyndhurst, and offers excellent walking and cycling trails, as well
as picnic spots.
South of Southampton is the Solent, and on a sunny day the views across this
piece of coastal water, featuring endless yachts to the backdrop of the dramatic
shores of the Isle of Wight, is a lovely sight. The Isle of Wight boasts one
of Britain's most temperate climates and is a popular summer destination with
Britons. Easily reached from Southampton by Redjet (30 mins), the island has
plentiful seaside towns full of B&Bs, with some lovely beaches and cliffside
walks. Cowes, the disembarking point of the ferry, hosts the annual Cowes Week
Yachting regatta (August), one of the world's most famous. On the island you
can visit the Ventnor Botanic Gardens, Osborne House and Carisbrooke Castle.
