Mini guide to St Albans

St Alban's has an exciting past but is these days a quiet town on the fringe of London's urban sprawl. It was built by the Romans and has some of the best preserved Roman ruins in the country. In those days it was called Verulamium, and visitors today can walk around a magnificent Roman museum and impressive Roman theatre, as well as several buildings that date from the medieval era and have been remarkably preserved.

A good place to start exploring the town is the Clock Tower, which is 600 years old and the only medieval town belfry in England. If you have enough energy, clamber up its 93 steps for a panoramic view of Verulamium Park, which covers 100 acres, including the site of the original Roman town.

Afterwards, take a walk through this park to the Verulamium Museum, which has won awards for its impressive displays of mosaics and reconstructed rooms that give a taste of life in Roman times. Nearby are the foundations of a Roman house, a row of Roman shops, a sacred shrine and an open-air Roman theatre.
If you get hungry or thirsty during your exploration, head for the High street end of Verulam road, quite near the Clock Tower, where you will find a wide choice of restaurants, cafés and bistros.

As already mentioned, St Alban's is within easy reach of London (just 29kms away), which has a fantastic range of entertainment in its theatres and clubs. Also near to St Alban's, just a short drive to the northwest, is Redbournbury Mill, a watermill built in the 18th century. After looking around the mill, take a stroll along the adjacent 'Views of the Ver Valley Walk' public footpath.

Located directly north of London, St Alban's has easy access to the M1 and M25 motorways, from where it is quick and convenient to drive to all parts of the country. Trains depart regularly from the local station to central London and destinations north. The airports of Luton and Heathrow are also nearby; Luton is a half-hour drive away, and Heathrow is about an hour's journey.
