Mini guide to St Ives
This fishing village on the north-coast of Cornwall, with its sandy beaches,
narrow streets, and well-kept cottages, is England's most famous artists' colony.
It is a picturesque little harbour town that attracts tourists in the summer,
offering them a dose of sun and clotted cream scones along its 'oil painting'
waterfront esplanade.
Befitting its status as an artists mecca, two of the most vaunted sights are
the Barbara Hepworth Museum, where visitors can see where the world famous sculptor
lived and worked, and the St Ives Tate Gallery which exhibits works by local
artist and those who had a profound impact on painting in the United Kingdom
in the latter half of the 20th century.
To take a break from the art and culture stroll down the narrow streets past
the Old Fishermen's houses and walk along the beach where the warmish Atlantic
Ocean may tempt you for a swim, or you may want to stroll back to the Tate Modern,
whose position offers sweeping views of Porthmear Beach and the coastline.
Shopping in St Ives tends to focus on art, be it paintings, drawings or sculptures.
If you are more concerned with eating and drinking then numerous pubs dot the
small streets clustered around the harbour, and quality seafood is readily available
with places such as the Garrack Hotel and Restaurant specializing in lobster.
Near S. Ives is the resort town of Newquay, where you can join the surfers
in catching some waves and sample the heady nightlife, or slightly further down
the coast is the delightful fishing village of Pladstow, with its internationally
renowned restaurants, maritime history and medieval buildings.
There are several services a day between London's Paddington Station and St
Ives (5 hours), with a brief connection in St Erth. Buses run from London's
Victoria Coach Station to St. Ives (7 hrs.) and If you're driving, take the
A30 across Cornwall, heading northwest at the junction with the B3306, heading
to St. Ives on the coast. Nearby Plymouth has an International Airport, as does
Southampton, though overseas visitors would have to touch down in London.
