Mini guide to Stoke-on-Trent

Stoke-on-Trent is situated in the geographical centre of England, and rose to importance for its production of ceramics. The region is now known as 'The Potteries', and still produces some of the country's best English china, such as: Royal Doulton, Wedgewood and Spode. Each of these factories is open for visits and they are all fascinating places to wander around.

Besides the factories themselves, the Potteries Museum & Art Gallery is a good place to learn about the region's history. It is located in Hanley, and contains a huge collection of Staffordshire ceramics, as well as an explanation of how the region rose to prominence during the Industrial Revolution.

When you have seen enough ceramics, take a look at the Cultural Quarter and Festival Park, where there are lots of entertainment options, or visit one of the local stately home such as Biddulph Grange. If nature is your thing, head for the Victorian Garden or the Stapeley Water Gardens, which claim to be the biggest of their type in the world.

Needless to say, when it comes to souvenirs, most people want to purchase a sample of the famous local ceramics, and the best place to do this is the Potteries Shopping Centre, where many retailers offer their wares under a single roof. As for entertainment, the Cultural Quarter features West End musicals and dramas, as well as an array of cafés and bistros. Festival Park contains a water theme park, a marina, a dry-slope ski centre and a multi-screen cinema.

Though this is the heart of an industrial region, there are many interesting places you can drive to from Stoke. The Peak District National Park offers some of the country's finest views and good opportunities for hiking. Alton Towers is one of the most popular theme parks in Britain, and Shugborough Hall, surrounded by 900 acres of parkland, is also open to the public.

Stoke is just a short drive from Birmingham, while London and Manchester are little over an hour away. There are good connections from London (Euston) by train, and the nearest airport is the East Midlands Airport.
