For such as small town Stratford-upon-Avon enjoys a very important status as one of Britain's premier tourist attractions. Much of this is because William Shakespeare grew up here, and although England's most famous bard spent his acting and writing days in London, his life and times have been well recorded at sites such as Shakespeare Birthplace, The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust and Library, and Anne Hathaway's cottage.

Besides this however, the town is largely unspoilt by modern development and offers a picturesque insight into a wool market town of the Middle Ages. Many Tudor building remain along the pedestrianised Henley street, interspersed with souvenir shops and quaint pubs. The Royal Shakespeare Theatre puts on shows daily and sits beside the pretty Avon river, itself sandwiched by the Bancroft Gardens.

If Shakespeare tires you, there is also Harvard House (associated with the family who founded the University), the Falstaff Experience - a realistic journey through the Ages in Stratford - and the Teddy Museum.
To the south of Stratford lie the lovely Cotswolds, full of charming villages that hark back to another era. Northwards, the 11th century Warwick Castle is one of the most impressive castles in Britain rising majestically from the banks of the River Avon. Blenheim Palace and Ragley Hall are two other impressive manors.
At Batsford, there is a lovely arboretum and Japanese garden, Alternatively you can delight yourself at the colourful Butterfly Farm. The Motor Centre at Gaydon has an extensive collection of British vehicles from all eras.

The beautiful Malvern Hills stand solitary to the west of Worcester and the Forest of Arden show how the vegetation of the area once was.

Getting to Stratford upon Avon is easy, just a few miles west of junction 15 on the M40, south of Warwick. There are several trains a day from London (duration: 2 hours) with more frequent services to Birmingham. Although there is an international airport in Birmingham there are better options from London Heathrow. Coaches also regularly serve the town.
