Mini guide to Stroud
Stroud, in the county of Gloucestershire, is a pleasant unspoiled market town
surrounded by five sweeping valleys and some truly awesome panoramic scenery.
Now famous for its annual Fringe Festival, the town is a popular visitor spot
offering both its own attractions and those of the surrounding Cotswolds area.
Woodchester Mansion, set in a secluded valley near Stroud and reputed to be
haunted, is one of the area's most popular sites of historic interest. The Victorian
mansion was abandoned by its builders back in 1868 before the architectural
masterpiece was completed and it remains virtually untouched.
Both Stroud town and the surrounding district are famous for attracting creative
people, and the district has now allegedly overtaken Cornwall as the most popular
home for authors and artists in Britain. The Stroud House Gallery is a local
spot where visitors can appreciate the creative talents of some of the district's
inhabitants. The gallery is home to all manner of contemporary art displays
from both famous and unknown artists.
Stroud's pubs and restaurants offer both great food and a range of locally
brewed beers. Brasserie, Italian and Indian eating establishments are also available.
For evening entertainment, the Everyman Theatre in nearby Cheltenham offers
some fantastic professional stage productions.
Just outside Stroud is Stratford Park, 56 acres of greenbelt dedicated to relaxation
and local leisure pursuits. The park offers a wide range of amenities including
gardens, woodland walks and an ornamental lake. During the summer the bandstand
is home to local brass bands that perform for the crowds every Sunday afternoon.
Stroud and surrounding Gloucestershire are served by the M5 motorway, while
the A46, A38, A419, A4135 and A4173 also lead into the town. For rail travellers
there is a station in the town itself and there are other stations at Cam and
Dursley and Stonehouse. The nearest international air connection for Stroud
can be found at Bristol.
