Geography of Swansea

Swansea is located on the edge of the Gower peninsula, an area that has been
officially designated as an 'Area of Outstanding Beauty'. The area is predominantly
owned by the National Trust and has wonderful sandy beaches, beautiful cliffs,
nature preserves and smuggler's coves. Also, footpaths lead around most of the
coast, making it a wonderful area to explore by foot.
The Cambrian mountains, known as the 'Green Desert of Wales', run right down
the middle of the Gower Peninsula. The Cambrian Mountains area encompasses Plynlimon,
the highest mountain in mid-Wales, the huge upland area known as Elenydd, and
it includes the headwaters of many of the great rivers of Wales: the Elan, Irfon,
Rheidol, Severn, Teifi, Tywi, Wye, and Ystwyth. In fact, the catchment area
of the Elan River, which is dotted with numerous reservoirs built to supply
Birmingham, is now designated a 'Site of Special Scientific Interest' and is
managed by the Elan Trust.
