Mini guide to Taunton

Famous for its cider, Taunton is a town with a rich and interesting history dating back to Roman times. Located in Somerset, it was of great significance to the Saxon King Ine of Wessex, who erected an earthen castle around 700 AD, while sometime before 904 AD other Saxons dwellers erected the area's first monastery. While the town has retained elements of its history and heritage, the last half decade has seen Taunton become a busy regional shopping town.

During WWII the town played a key role in England's strategy against the Germans when the Bridgwater and Taunton Canals were utilised to form part of the Taunton Stop Line. The Somerset Military Museum is well worth a visit and features displays chronicling the history of the Somerset Light Infantry and other Somerset regiments.

Hestercombe Gardens, over 40 acres of land, lakes, streams and scenic woodlands provides hours of rambling and makes a pleasant day out, while Sheppy's Cider Farm Centre gives visitors an interesting insight into the making of the county's most popular drink. The centre offers 47 acres of orchards, a picnic area and a rural life museum.

Taunton has a good variety of restaurants with traditional British establishments available alongside international cuisine; the likes of Indian, French, Italian and Chinese eating establishments are all on offer. The town's charming rural pubs are a good place to sample some of the locally made cider amid the pleasant and welcoming atmosphere provided by the locals.

The neighbouring town of Wellington provides an interesting day out from Taunton. Famous for its extensive selection of speciality shops, Wellington offers visitors a chance to buy goods ranging from locally produced cheeses to New Age crystals.

Taunton is served mainly by the M5 motorway, while the A38 and A39 also provide access. For rail travellers, the town has its own mainline station, while those arriving by air can fly to Bristol Airport and then take a road or rail transfer.
