Mini guide to Telford

Named after the engineer Thomas Telford, the city of Telford in the county of Shropshire is a planned town with a history dating back only as far as 1963 when it was first designated. Later, in 1968, it was redesignated to include the historic area of Ironbridge Gorge. While the town itself is historically young, the history of the area as a whole dates back many thousands of years and its historic appeal is one reason that visitors come to Telford today.

Ironbridge Gorge is probably the town's most historic area; it was originally known as Severn Gorge and sometimes was called Coalbrookdale; it is purported to be the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. The gorge now takes its name from the village of Ironbridge, which itself took its name from a bridge built in 1779 that links the town of Broseley with Madeley Wood and Coalbrookdale. The gorge has now been declared a World Heritage Site.

Aside from the gorge, local attractions include Weston Park and the Royal Air Force Museum. The former is a stately home set in beautiful surrounding parkland. It was previously home to generations of the Earls of Bradford and has undoubtedly been subject to their influence. Meanwhile, the Royal Air Force Museum is a must for anyone with an interest in military or aerospace history. Its collection spans nearly 90 years of aviation history and the museum is home to more than 80 aircraft from Great Britain, the USA, Germany and Japan.

The Telford Shopping Centre is the town's focal point for local retailers and features 160 stores encompassing both independent and well known retailers. For dining in Telford, visitors have the choice of traditional British establishments as well as French, Italian, Chinese and an extensive range of Indian restaurants. Nightlife options are limited and a trip to the local cinema or an evening in one of the town's pubs or bars is recommended.

If you're looking for a day out from Telford, then nearby Shrewsbury is well worth a visit. The town's highlights include Shrewsbury Castle, Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery, Attingham Park and St Mary's Church. Just outside of Shrewsbury in Wroxeter are the remains of Britain's fourth largest Roman city which was originally called Viroconium Cornoviorum.

Telford is served by the M54 motorway, which connects it to Wolverhampton and other cities via the M6. Telford Central railway station has connections to London and other major UK destinations, while the nearest airports are at Birmingham, Liverpool and Manchester, all about one hour's drive away.
