Mini guide to Tewkesbury

Nestled deep in a valley at the junction of the Severn and Avon rivers, Tewkesbury dates back to medieval times and is filled with fabulously preserved historical structures including the exquisitely constructed and detailed Tewkesbury Abbey.

Set in the northern Cotswold Gloucestershire region, the town is regarded as one of England's best examples of an ancient medieval townscape with over 350 buildings that have been categorised as being of special architectural or historical interest. Wandering through the ancient village streets, visitors can peruse numerous black and white, timber-framed structures typical of Tudor times, complete with intricately carved entrance areas and overhanging upper floors. The town's landscape is dominated by the spectacular form of Tewkesbury Abbey, which was founded around 1087 and boasts a splendid Norman arch and flanking turrets.

Tewkesbury is home to two excellent museums: the Tewkesbury Museum and the John Moore Countryside Museum. The former documents the history and culture of the region, while the latter focuses on the local countryside environment and includes a natural history collection and exhibition of wildlife sculptures.

The town centre is characterised by a myriad of specialty shops, antique stores, restaurants, coffee houses, cosy pubs and rustic inns, providing endless retail and dining opportunities. The main retail areas are located on Barton, Church and High streets, and a twice-weekly market is held on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Boating trips, golf, tennis, horseback riding, cycling, bowling and fishing are popular leisure activities available in the area.

A host of tourist attractions are located within easy driving distance of Tewkesbury and it is well worth hiring a car to explore the surrounding areas. Highlights in the nearby towns and countryside include Sudeley Castle & Gardens, Stratford-upon-Avon Butterfly Farm, Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway, Prinknash Abbey, the Cotswold Falconry and Eastnor Castle.

Tewkesbury is accessible via exit 9 of the M5 motorway and is served by coaches from London, Oxford and Cheltenham, while local buses from Worcester, Malvern, Gloucester, Cheltenham and Evesham also run services to Tewkesbury. The closest rail station is at Ashchurch and a local bus travels regularly between the station and Tewkesbury. The nearest airport is at Staverton.
