Mini guide to Tunbridge Wells

Founded in 1606 when Lord North announced that the chalybeate spring had health giving properties, Royal Tunbridge Wells, became a favourite haunt of the nobility and royal family. This genteel past is still much in evidence now in this elegant and scenic town.

Visitors should ensure that they walk among the Pantiles, the area of 17th century streets and shopping arcades with its art galleries, boutiques and country stores. Visitors should also partake in the health giving properties of the chalybeate spring whose water can still be sampled in the summer. Interesting information on the town's history can also be found in the exhibition 'A Day at the Wells' in the Corn Exchange.

A walking tour with a shopping theme begins in the Pantiles and Chapel Place, with its specialist shops, and renowned antiques and then continues northwards up the old High Street with its small lanes and Victorian shops, selling designer clothes and jewellery. The walk finishes at the Royal Victoria Palace, a modern shopping centre.

For good food visit Thackeray's House which was once owned by the novelist William Makepeace Thackeray, and now serves fine food in a traditional setting. Other restaurants and bars abound in the centre of Tunbridge, befitting its role as a regional centre.

A good excursion from Tunbridge Wells is Hever Castle. Dating from 1270, the former home of the beheaded Anne Boleyn, still retains its massive walls and moat and is a textbook English example of a medieval castle. It also has a huge and beautiful scenic garden surrounding the castle as well as a reconstructed Tudor village.

Two to three trains per hour leave London's Charing Cross Station during the day bound for Hastings, going via the town center of Royal Tunbridge Wells. If you're driving from London continue east along the M25, cutting southeast at the exit for the A21 to Hastings.
