Mini guide to Victoria

This area can be described as Britain's seat of power, with the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben and Westminster Abbey and Cathedral, as well as Whitehall, location of 10 Downing Street, the Prime Minster's home and office.

Located beside the Thames river, the magnificently gothic Houses of Parliament is home to the House of Commons and the House of Lords and has 1,100 rooms. Although most sessions are closed, some are open to the public and can be watched from the Visitor's Gallery. Big Ben is part of the Houses of Parliament building. Many people don't know this, but Big Ben is not the name of the clock tower, but the name of the bell inside.

Westminster Abbey has been the setting for every coronation (except two) since 1066. Visitors can see the Grave of the Unknown Warrior, the Coronation Chair, Lady Chapel and Poets' Corner, Pyx Chamber, the Royal Chapels and the Undercroft Museum.

Discreetly and unassumingly located off Whitehall, Number 10 Downing Street has been the residence of the British Prime Minister since 1732. Although it is not possible to visit the inside, people still flock to the gate of this closed off street.

The Cabinet War Rooms give the visitor a glimpse into WWII and have been kept exactly as they were during the war.

The Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace is the most famous of London's regular events. The new guard leaves the Wellington Barracks, in Birdcage Walk, preceded by a band, three minutes before the change, and marches down to the Palace. The ceremony lasts for 40 minutes, and takes place inside the railings of the palace.

This area can be accessed via Victoria station, which is on the Piccadilly, Circle, and District lines. Victoria station is one of the busiest railway stations in London, and is where the Airbus to Heathrow Airport stops. Nearby is also Victoria Coach Station servicing various destinations in the UK. Overall, this location provides excellent access to and from the major tourist attractions.
