Mini guide to Whitby

Whitby, located on the northeast coast of England in North Yorkshire, is an ancient town steeped in history. It is home to a famous abbey and magnificent church, as well as a picturesque harbour and some lovely beaches. The old town is concentrated on the eastern banks of the harbour formed by the River Esk, once a vibrant fishing port; while the western side has been a favourite seaside resort since Victorian times.

The most popular attraction in the town is undoubtedly Whitby Abbey. Founded in 656 AD by Abbess Hilda, it is perched along the high cliffs behind the town and accessed via 199 well-worn steps. The climb is worth it for the inspiring ruins and grand vistas of the town and ocean below. The visitor centre houses archeological remains, audio-visual displays and other information documenting the history of Whitby and its inhabitants, including Bram Stoker, author of 'Dracula'.

The town is a scenic place to wander around and take in the sights and smells. A stroll along the harbourside or through the cobbled laneways of the old town is particular pleasant, while there is even a Dracula themed guided tour available. St Mary's Church dates back to 1110 and is still used by the local townspeople today. Whitby Museum was built in 1823 and documents local history with a variety of displays and collections.

Whitby boasts numerous shops as well as supermarkets and shopping centres, while the town is famous for its 'jet', ancient fossilised wood that has been carved into jewellery by local craftsmen for centuries. You'll also find an ample number of restaurants and pubs to satisfy your dining and entertainment needs.

Either side of Whitby you'll encounter spectacular coastline and charming fishing villages, while inland you can explore the heather covered moorlands and green valleys of the North Yorkshire Moors. Duncombe Park is a magnificent mansion built in 1713 and surrounded by scenic parkland, while the ruins of atmospheric Rievaulx Abbey are enchanting. Goathland is home to the popular TV series 'Heartbeat'.

The A174 runs through Whitby, as does the A171, with both leading northwest to Middlesbrough, while the A171 leads southeast to Scarborough and York. Whitby Station offers both local and regional rail services and coach services are also available.
