Mini guide to Winchester

The home of Alfred the Great and the ancient capital of England, Winchester combines a glorious past with the beauty of a market town surrounded by lush countryside. It is one of England's real gems and should not be missed.

Not to me missed is the magnificent cathedral, the longest in England, with its imposing façade and tombs of the early Saxon kings; Jane Austen - the famous English novelist - is also buried inside the church. The castle Great Hall is one of the finest medieval halls in the country and is famous for containing King Arthur's Round Table. It also housed the trial of Sir Walter Raleigh. Nearby, Winchester College is one of the oldest and most prestigious schools in the country and its medieval buildings are opened daily to visitors.

For a walk which combines Winchester's heritage and beauty take the scenic meadows path by the River Itchin to the Hospital of St. Cross, which dates from 1132 and is the oldest charitable institution in England.

Shopping suits every tastein Winchester as expensive boutiques, tourist shops and high street stores sit side by side in this affluent market town. Likewise, eating options range from up-markets restaurants such the Hotel du Vin and Bistro to the acclaimed food and ales served at the Wyken Arms, where school desks from Winchester College are used as tables. Nightlife revolves around the pubs with the popular Porthouse offering three floors of entertainment.

An interesting excursion from Winchester is Chawton Cottage, where Jane Austen spent much of her life and where the rooms are recreated as they would have been in her time, plus a museum detailing her life and work. Further afield is the south coast of England, including Southampton, the Isle of Wight, Bournemouth and the New Forest all within easy striking distance of a day tripper.

From London's Waterloo Station a frequent daily train service runs to Winchester (duration: 1 hour). National Express buses leave from London's Victoria Coach Station for Winchester (duration: 2 hours) during the day. If you're driving, from Southampton drive north on the A335; from London, take the M3 motorway southwest.
