Mini guide to Witney

Witney is a laid back Cotswold market town in Oxfordshire, best known for its traditional blankets that have been made here for the last 1,000 years and have a sterling reputation for quality. Action is centred on the old market square, while the town and surrounding countryside are home to numerous old buildings and historical monuments.

The main feature of the market square is the Buttercross, a medieval meeting place that has attracted people from surrounding villages to trade and socialize for centuries. The clock tower was added in 1683. On the opposite side of the square is the 17th century Town Hall, while nearby is the 18th century Blanket Hall. Next to the market square is the 13th century Church of St Mary with its unusual spire and lovely church green.

Witney is home to a breathtaking number of traditional pubs as well as several bars, cafés, takeaways and restaurants. The market square sits at the junction of the two main streets, where you'll find basic shopping facilities.

Cogges Manor Farm Museum is just out of town and features a restored 13th century manor house with Victorian furnishings along with demonstrations of cooking, hand milking, butter making, lace making, spinning and traditional crafts. South Leigh is home to St James Church, which houses some impressive medieval paintings. Nearby Oxford is famous for the beautiful architecture of its university and its colleges steeped in tradition.

Witney is situated just off the A40 at junction 9, west of Oxford. Finstock Station is located four miles away and offers regular local and regional rail services, while frequent coach services are also available.
