Mini guide to Woking

Woking is a small town in northwest Surrey, located approximately 30 minutes by train from London, and 15 minutes by train from the historical town of Guildford. The town encompasses a number of modern shopping centres and the Shah Jehan Mosque, England's first mosque, which was constructed in 1899.

Woking was once home to HG Wells, frequently referred to as 'the father of science fiction', who chose the town as the setting for 'The War of the Worlds'. A modern sculpture in the town centre, The Martian depicts a character from the novel and serves to commemorate both the author and his book.

Other attractions in Woking are the town gates, constructed in 1992 and embellished with an array of unusual images related to the town's history and culture; the Woking Mural, billed as one of England's finest examples of street art; and the ruins of Woking Palace, once the residence of Henry VIII.

Recreational areas in the town include Woking Park, with its extensive public gardens and leisure centre, and Horsell's Common, a 750-acre area of land that is ideal for walking, horseback riding and picnicking.

There are retail outlets abound in Woking and keen shoppers should head to the Town Square, which allows access to Wolsey Place Shopping Centre and the Peacock Centre mall and entertainment complex, and there are a number of market stalls between the two centres.

Just 15 minutes drive from Woking is the town of Guildford, with extensive historical attractions including an ancient guildhall and clock, a Norman castle and the former home of 'Alice in Wonderland' author Lewis Carroll's family. Also of interest is the Guilford House Gallery, housed in a 17th century apartment, and the local museum which traces the town's development through the ages.

Woking is connected to other parts of the country by the A320, M25 and A3 motorways and is served by regular coaches travelling along these routes. The town has its own railway station and frequent trains make the 30-minute journey between Woking and London's Waterloo Station. RailAir coaches destined for Heathrow International Airport leave from outside the station, while Gatwick International Airport can be reached via Guildford railway station or Clapham Junction.
