Mini guide to Wolverhampton

In the heart of the Black Country, historic Wolverhampton has much to offer. Whether you come for its industrial heritage, entertainment or famous football team, you will not be short of things to do.

Sights worthy of note include Bantock House. Located just outside the city centre it brims with heritage and treasures of a bygone era, including hands-on activities which bring the house and Wolverhampton's history to life. Also nearby is Boscobel House, a beautiful timber-framed building famous for sheltering Charles II after defeat at Worcester. The house has been fully refurbished and has a hunting lodge, dairy, farmyard, smithy and gardens. Inside the city centre, the Wolverhampton Art Gallery is renowned for its innovative programmes of temporary exhibitions and lively workshops and events. It is most famous for its contemporary and modern art but contains paintings by Turner and Gainsborough too.

Walking enthusiasts should visit the Smestow Valley nature reserve with 150 acres of woodland, streams and meadows. Walks of various lengths can be made along the railway track or along the towpath of the Stafford and Worcester canal.

Wolverhampton caters to most shoppers needs with its national chain stores and pedestrianised centre. Dudley Street contains a market and the Wulfrun Centre has a large retail selection. The car-free city centre has many restaurants and cafes to eat in and numerous pubs and bars. And if you have time try to see Wolverhampton Wanderers (Wolves) football team play at Molineaux Stadium.

Nearby places of interest include Britain's second biggest ccity, Birmingham, famous for its shopping and nightlife, as well as Warwick, with its magnificent medieval castle.

Leave the M6 at Junction 10 and then take the A454 to Wolverhampton. Hourly trains run from London Euston and more frequently from Birmingham New Street. To arrive by plane go to Birmingham International Airport which is only 40 minutes away by train.
