Mini guide to Yeovil
Located in Somerset in the south of England, Yeovil is a relatively small town
with a population of about 40,000 people. During the Industrial Revolution it
made a name for itself as a glove manufacturer, which led to its local football
team being named the Glovers. These days it is a pleasant market town that retains
many good examples of its interesting historical past.
For sites of historical interest, the 16th century Montacute House is a popular
destination with visitors. Its construction is credited to Sir Edward Phelips,
a successful lawyer and politician of the time. The building is now owned by
the National Trust and is a concrete example of Sir Edward Phelips' wealth and
standing in the community at the time it was built.
The town's Fleet Air Army Museum invites visitors to witness one of the world's
largest aviation museums. There are over 90 aircraft in the collection, of which
over 40 are historic. The collection includes the Concorde 002. Meanwhile, the
Museum of South Somerset has displays chronicling the historical development
of Yeovil and its neighbouring towns in the South Somerset region.
For shopping, Yeovil has all manner of establishments including many well known
stores, as well as a large selection of independent retailers. Glovers Walk
and Quedam Shopping Centre offer a good selection of shops in a pleasant indoor
environment. There is also a good choice of venues for eating out, with a selection
of both English and international cuisine.
For a day trip from Yeovil, try visiting some of its neighbouring towns and
villages.
East Coker, for example, is a pleasant village with a traditional rural charm
and is famous for being the last resting place of legendary author T S Eliot.
Nearby Sutton Bingham, Stoford, Evershot, Halstock and Yetminster also offer
glimpses of unspoilt country life.
By car, Yeovil can be reached via the A30 and A37. Yeovil Pen Mill is the nearest
railway station, offering connections to other Somerset stations and various
national links. Bristol International Airport supplies the nearest air connection.
